DigiDementia

Developing digital practices for tackling dementia

About the Project

DigiDementia project aims to raise awareness about dementia and strengthen the skills of those involved in dementia care. It offers professional development opportunities for carers working in care facilities, while also supporting family members in better understanding the disease and providing more effective care to their loved ones. By fostering knowledge and capacity, DigiDementia contributes to the creation of a more targeted and sustainable care strategy, ensuring high-quality, long-term support for people living with dementia.

Objectives

  • Enhancement of dementia-friendly initiatives for elderly caregivers in order to reduce the stigma around the disease and provide a targeted dementia care.
  • Provide support to people with dementia and their families in order to deal with the condition.
  • Introducing digital practices in slowing dementia’s progress.

Results

  • Report mapping proven and effective methods of care for people with dementia in participating countries – emphasis will be placed on digital tools using artificial intelligence
  • A web platform using artificial intelligence. The platform will contain digitized care methods described in the previous project output (report). A chatbot will be available for sharing experiences between caregivers, informal caregivers and people with dementia. The platform will be pilot tested directly with selected social service providers.
  • A new educational curriculum that will be pilot tested.
  • Online educational program.

Activities

Project Management: The Project Team will be set & a Project Management Mechanism will be established.

Financial control: The preparation activities include the development of a Financial Management Mechanism.

Quality Assurance: Development of QA Plan that will include a clear set of indicators and a risk mitigation strategy.

Communication: Establishment of an Internal Communication Strategy as integral part of the PM Handbook, in order to define the means, the frequency and the method of consortium communication.

Work Package 2 lays the groundwork for a clear, unbiased understanding of dementia by outlining its key characteristics and identifying the most effective, up-to-date care practices. It also explores digital tools—especially those using AI—that can support or potentially slow the progression of dementia. The focus is on practical, online solutions that can be used by both formal and informal caregivers.

Work Package 3 focuses on transforming traditional dementia care practices into accessible digital solutions. It involves the development of an online platform featuring targeted care practices and AI-powered tools, along with a supportive forum for caregivers, families, and individuals affected by dementia. By digitalizing the best practices identified in WP2, WP3 aims to create a connected, practical, and user-friendly environment that supports quality care and helps slow the progression of dementia.

Work Package 4 focuses on upskilling both formal and informal caregivers in dementia care. Building on the outcomes of  WP2 and WP3, WP4 involves the development and pilot implementation of a targeted training programme to enhance caregivers’ skills in dementia care and digital tools. It also aims to improve the understanding of dementia among nursing home staff and family members, empowering them to provide more comprehensive and empathetic support.

Work Package 5 focuses on raising awareness, promoting project results, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of DigiDementia. It aims to effectively share outcomes with stakeholders, decision-makers, and caregivers, encouraging widespread adoption of the platform, training programme, and digital tools. By doing so, WP5 supports greater impact, transferability, and contributes to the digital transformation of dementia care.
